What the check looks at.
Three important DNS records inbox providers use to check whether email from your domain is properly authenticated.
- Sender list (SPF)
- A list of the services allowed to send email as your domain. If the service you actually use is not on it, your email looks forged.
- Signature (DKIM)
- A tamper-proof seal added to every email you send. It proves the message really came from you and was not changed on the way.
- Protection (DMARC)
- Instructions for what inbox providers should do with email that fails the checks. It tells inbox providers what to do when email fails authentication and helps protect your domain from being impersonated.
How it works.
The tool does a fresh lookup of your domain’s DNS records each time you run it, works out who runs your email from what it finds, and cross-checks that your sending records match that provider. It looks for DKIM under the selectors the main providers use, so a small number of hosts that issue a unique selector per customer will show as unconfirmed rather than missing.
It is free because I built it for my own clients and there was no reason not to share it. I keep the domain and the result so I can see what people are running into; no email address is asked for and no cookies are set.
